OSRS Yama Solo Guide: Easy Mage-Only Strategy
Defeating Old School RuneScape boss Yama solo can feel intimidating at first, but the mage-only method offers a relaxed and consistent way to secure kills. While duo runs are faster and more resource-efficient, soloing allows you to claim 100% of the loot while still maintaining respectable kill times of roughly 6.5–7.5 minutes per kill, depending on your gear and familiarity with the mechanics. Many players farm bosses like Yama to build wealth for better equipment, while others may look for alternative ways to progress, such as choosing to buy OSRS gold to speed up their upgrades. This guide explains the recommended setup, how to reach the boss, and how to handle each phase of the fight.
Recommended Gear and Inventory
The mage-only setup focuses on maximizing magic accuracy and damage while maintaining enough survivability for the longer solo fight.
Recommended gear:
· Ahrim’s hood
· Occult necklace
· Virtus robe top
· Ahrim’s robe skirt
· Pegasian or similar magic-focused boots
· Lightbearer ring (helpful but optional)
· Magic gauntlets such as Confliction gauntlets
· Purging staff (highly recommended)
· Elidinis ward
· Raid blessing
· Zamorak cape
These items can be adjusted depending on your account progression. Better gear will speed up kill times, while lower-tier alternatives remain viable.
Inventory setup:
· Emberlight weapon (utility)
· Saradomin godsword (optional but helpful for healing)
· 5× Super restore potions
· Anglerfish for overhealing
· Antidote++ potion
· Saturated heart for a magic boost
· Book of the Dead (for thralls)
· Divine rune pouch with fire, soul, death, and blood runes
· Extra cosmic runes
· Teleport item such as a Max cape
Use the Arceuus Spellbook. Cast Mark of Darkness to boost demon-bane spell damage, summon thralls for extra DPS, and optionally use Death Charge to recover special attack energy if you rely on SGS healing.
Your primary attack should be Dark Demonbane autocast with the Purging Staff.
Getting to Yama
Before leaving, overheal with an anglerfish. Then teleport to the nearest fairy ring and enter code DJR, which leads to the Chasm of Fire.
From there:
1. Climb down the rope (requires 73 Agility).
2. Climb down the chain (requires 83 Agility).
3. If you lack these levels, you’ll need to run around the area instead.
At the bottom, speak to the Voice of Yama if it’s your first visit. Afterwards, you can simply choose “Travel” to enter Yama’s lair instantly. Run north to begin the fight.
Core Mechanics
Yama’s mechanics revolve around glyphs that appear during combat.
· Red glyph: Indicates Yama will attack with ranged.
· Purple glyph: Indicates magic attacks.
Your protection prayer should match the attack style shown by the first glyph. During certain special attacks, standing in the center of a glyph completely negates incoming damage.
Additional mechanics include:
· Shadow walls that move across the arena
· Void flares that must be killed quickly
· Flame patterns that deal moderate damage if ignored
The most important priority throughout the fight is standing on a glyph during special attacks while maintaining correct prayer protection.
Phase One (100%–66%)
Start the encounter by drinking Antidote++, activating your magic boost, casting Mark of Darkness, and summoning a thrall.
Attack Yama while switching prayers based on his attack style. When a special attack animation appears, immediately move onto a glyph tile to avoid heavy damage.
During this phase:
· Dodge shadow walls by stepping through or around them.
· Avoid flame patches if possible.
· Kill Void Flares immediately when they spawn.
Void Flares require two attacks each. A common technique is to use a special attack from the Purging Staff on the second hit, allowing you to regenerate special attack energy and resume attacking quickly.
Phase one ends when Yama reaches 66% health.
Shadow Realm Intermission
At 66%, Yama banishes you to a shadow realm where you must cross stepping stones while avoiding fireballs.
Look ahead to identify safe paths. Walking through the fireballs at the correct moment avoids damage.
At the end of the path you face Judge Yama. Alternate attacks between melee and magic until it dies. This section is also a safe opportunity to heal or restore prayer before returning to the main arena.
Phase Two (66%–33%)
Phase two is almost identical to phase one but with slightly increased difficulty:
· Flame attacks spawn more frequently.
· Shadow walls may appear in pairs.
· Void Flares still spawn in groups of two.
Continue following the same priorities:
1. Correct protection prayers
2. Standing on glyphs for specials
3. Quickly killing Void Flares
When Yama reaches 33% health, you will be sent to the shadow realm again for another Judge Yama encounter.
Phase Three (Final Phase)
Phase three is the most chaotic part of the fight.
At the start, pray the opposite style of the first glyph from earlier phases. Yama will repeatedly drop triple fireballs above your character. Their orientation determines your movement:
· Vertical fireballs: Step right → diagonal up → straight up.
· Horizontal fireballs: Step up → diagonal right → right.
At the same time, you must continue switching prayers between Yama’s attacks. Surviving is more important than maximizing damage here, so focus on movement and defensive timing.
Void Flares also return during this phase but can be defeated quickly.
Once Yama’s health reaches zero, the fight ends and you receive the full loot.
Final Tips
Although solo kills take longer than duos, the mage-only method offers a relaxed and reliable approach to farming Yama in Old School RuneScape. With practice, you can expect consistent kills around seven minutes and potentially complete two kills per trip depending on supplies. Many players who regularly farm bosses to build wealth or afford upgrades often look for ways to increase their resources efficiently, whether through boss drops or other methods such as acquiring cheap OSRS gold to speed up gear progression.
