Elden Ring: How to Complete White Mask Varré's Quest
Here's how to complete White Mask Varré's quest, and why it's worth your time.
First Meeting
You'll first meet White Mask Varré at The First Step Site of Grace, where he mocks you as "maidenless" and offers vague guidance. After you meet the Two Fingers in the Roundtable Hold, a critical milestone in the main story, Varré disappears from this spot and reappears at Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes.
Rose Church and the Festering Bloody Finger
At Rose Church, Varré praises your judgment and gives you five Festering Bloody Fingers, an important Elden Ring Item used for invading other players. This marks the beginning of your initiation into the Lord of Blood's service.
To progress, you must complete one of the following:
Invade Other Players: Use the Festering Bloody Finger to invade other players three times. Winning is not necessary; you can simply use the Finger Severer to exit immediately, and it still counts.
Defeat Magnus the Beast Claw: As of patch 1.06, an offline option exists. You can find Magnus's red invasion sign in the Writheblood Ruins, guarded by bloodhounds. Defeat him to continue the quest without needing online play.
Either option satisfies Varré's condition. Return to Rose Church, and he'll officially welcome you into the fold, offering the Lord of Blood's Favor, a cloth you must soak in the blood of a maiden.
Maiden's Blood
Soaking the Lord of Blood's Favor is a grim but vital step. There are several ways to do this:
Church of Inhibition: Atop Frenzied Flame Village lies a dead maiden inside the church.
Chapel of Anticipation: If you've unlocked the second portal at The Four Belfries, you can return to the game's opening area and find a maiden's corpse.
Irina: Located near the entrance of the Weeping Peninsula. Killing her grants the required blood but ends her own questline.
Hyetta: Found first at the Lake-Facing Cliffs. Like Irina, killing her provides blood but halts her unique storyline.
After acquiring the blood, return to Varré. As a reward, he gives you the Bloody Finger, a reusable invasion item, and the Pureblood Knight's Medal, an extremely valuable Elden Ring Item that teleports you to Mohgwyn Palace, long before you can access it through traditional means.
Mohgwyn Palace and Rune Farming
Using the Pureblood Knight's Medal transports you to Mohgwyn Palace, home to Mohg, Lord of Blood. This area is infamous for its rune-rich enemies, making it one of the most lucrative places in the game for farming Elden Ring Runes.
Whether you're looking to level up faster or stockpile for item purchases, this early access to the Palace can give you a significant advantage. Just beware: the enemies here are tough, and Mohg himself is one of the more challenging demigods in Elden Ring.
Optional Fight
If you wish to end Varré's storyline with confrontation, you can. Near the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace in Mohgwyn Palace, you'll find a red invasion sign. Interact with it to invade and duel Varré himself.
Upon victory, return to the same location, and you'll find his wounded body in the corridor. Exhaust his dialogue, and he will die shortly after, leaving behind x6 Festering Bloody Fingers and Varré's Bouquet, a unique weapon and one of the rarer Elden Ring Items associated with blood loss builds.
Important Notes and Missables
Do Not Kill Varré Prematurely: Killing him before completing the questline permanently locks you out of obtaining the Pureblood Knight's Medal, preventing early access to Mohgwyn Palace and some of the game's best rune-farming zones.
Alternative Access: If Varré is dead, you can still reach Mohgwyn Palace via a hidden teleporter located north-northwest of the Yelough Anix Tunnel in the Consecrated Snowfield. However, this method is more difficult and delayed compared to Varré's route.
Conclusion
White Mask Varré's quest may start subtly, but it leads to one of Elden Ring's most powerful locations. Whether you choose to serve Mohg or confront Varré in battle, the path offers a mix of lore, challenge, and invaluable rewards.
Between the Elden Ring Runes you can harvest in Mohgwyn Palace and the unique Elden Ring Items tied to this quest, like the Bloody Finger and Varré's Bouquet, it's a storyline that benefits completionists, PvP fans, and rune-hunters alike.
Approach Varré with caution, but don't overlook his blood-soaked journey. It might just open the door to one of the game's richest, and darkest, payoffs.
